Tyre maintenance
Tyres are a critical safety device on your car. They keep you on the road. If your tyres are not maintained, it could well lead to an accident. Keep your tyres in optimum condition by following this guide:
Check your tyre pressures at least twice a month and always before setting off on a long journey. Check your spare at the same time — a flat or worn spare is useless when you need it most.
Make sure they're as close to the manufacturer specifications as possible. Under-inflation will stress the side-walls of your tyres and cause a poorer handling and less economic journey, while over-inflation will stress the entire structure of the tyre and give you less contact grip with the road.
Check your tread depth. By law, there must be at least 1.6mm of tread across the central 3/4 of the tyre circumference.
Keep your tread free of stones and other debris by giving them a clean on a regular basis.
Check for tyre damage. Even without heavy use, as your tyres age, the rubber becomes more susceptible to cracking and withering. It's vital you keep an eye out for cracks and distortions as these are preliminary indicators that a tyre may be about to fail.
If in doubt, ask a specialist. Pop in or give us a call on 01954 251 012.
